Tragedy hit the Nigeria Police Force, on Thursday, night  as a member of the top hierarchy of the  force, Ganiyu Dawodu,  a Deputy Inspector-General, died in a hotel room in  Lagos State. The police chief had lodged in one of the suites at Mabel Hotel in Ikorodu, allegedly with a girlfriend, identified  simply as Nike, a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Policemen from the homicide Section of the Lagos State Police Command, who stormed the hotel, reportedly found the lifeless body of the DIG on his hotel room bed.

The command was reportedly thrown into confusion on whether to arrest the deceased police chief’s female companion, following the manner of death.

The police chief,  about two weeks ago, allegedly returned from South Africa, where he reportedly went to treat a cardiac-related disease.

The DIG, who was until his death in-charge of the D Department of the Police, had earlier on Thursday, represented the IG, Hafiz Ringim, at a function in Abuja.

Saturday Tribune was informed that the deceased might have collapsed during an alleged sex session  with his girlfriend, who is currently a subject of investigation by the police.

A source at the Homicide Section of the  State Command, stated that  an unnamed police station in Ikorodu, who could not handle the circumstances surrounding the death, reported the incident at Panti.

The  police  source, who pleaded anonymity, further informed one of our correspondents that the remains of the police chief had been deposited at one of the teaching hospitals in the state.

Breaking the news on Friday, the IGP, who was having a meeting with DIGs, Zonal AIGs and state CPs in Abuja, said the death occurred on Thursday in Lagos when Dawodu along with his friends visited another friend of theirs in his hotel.

According to him, Dawodu, who was, for a long time, a heart patient, was said to have slumped and died.

“He had a heart problem and had been managing  it for some time now. We have also ordered a post-mortem and full-fledged investigation so that proper records will be established on the cause of his death,” he stated.
